Novel Reels is providing a pool party, free movie, books on Aug. 7

Memorial Park is the ideal place to plunge in not only to a pool, but the world of Atlantis and the realm of the written word.

From 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, a free event called Novel Reels will take place at the Chambersburg Aquatic Center, 1 Memorial Drive in Chambersburg. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chambersburg, Franklin County (Pa.) Library System and Ghost Writer, the pool party will

feature a screening of “Aquaman” (rated PG-13), popcorn, drinks and other snacks.

Members of the public are encouraged to take a dip to get in the mood for “Aquaman,” a 2018 film about a human-born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. They can dry off while thumbing through the books being provided at the event and pick up a coupon for a second one they can redeem at their local Franklin County library.

Titles to be given away include “Atlantis: The Accidental Invasion” by Gregory Mone; “The Beach (Bluey)” by Penguin Young Readers Licenses; “Science Comics: Sharks: Nature’s Perfect Hunter” by Joe Flood; Six of Crows boxed set: “Six of Crows Crooked Kingdom” by Leigh Bardugo; and “Pete the Cat: Scuba-Cat” by James Dean and Kimberly Dean.

Kirsten Hubbard is enthused about bringing Novel Reels back after a hiatus forced by the COVID-19 pandemic and expanding its reach.

"We are so excited to celebrate the return of the beloved Novel Reels program with our neighbors, and to extend the program for the first time to reach neighbors all across Franklin County," said Hubbard, founder and CEO of Ghost Writer, which provides grant-writing, marketing and other business services for nonprofits and other organizations.

Sarah Applegate, director of youth services for the Franklin County Library System and co-director of Coyle Free Library, is looking forward to the gathering.

"I'm super excited about our end-of-summer ‘dive-in’ movie pool party this year,” Applegate said. “I hope to see you there!"

The next Novel Reels will feature a screening of “Little Women,” snacks and themed activities Sunday, Dec. 5, at the Capitol Theatre Center in downtown Chambersburg, Pa. The event is made possible through a partnership between Franklin County Library System and Ghost Writer, and is being sponsored by FirstEnergy.
